TOUCH PROBE (ML9092T)

As a result of extensive consultations with users of touch memory technology, MBL Technologies has developed a new probe which overcomes many problems encountered in the field: the Touch Probe.

Touch memory technology is used primarily in applications relating to phyisical security, access control, vehicle protection, and fleet management. The MBL Technologies probe accepts the standard iButton (Microcan) supplied by Dallas-Maxim Semiconductor. Data is transferred to and from the iButton by touching its surface onto the MBL Technologies probe. As depicted below, the probe is available with either an 8mm central pin (left image) or 12mm central pin (right image).

Our touch probe technology offers the following distinct features and advantages:

  • Solid ABS Housing
  • All metallic parts made of stainless steel
  • Sealed, weatherproof construction
  • Positive panel mounting, using a large and secure plastic nut
  • Built-in bicolor LED (red and green standard, but any other colors available upon request)
  • Attractively priced

TOUCH AND HOLD PROBE (ML9092T&H)

The Touch and Hold Probe is designed to accept the iButton (in its plastic fob) and hold it for as long as is necessary for the reading process. It is made of three ABS injection-molded parts: the main housing and two covers. These three components are held together with stainless steel screws and nuts.

The iButton and fob are inserted through the front opening of the probe (there is only one correct insertion point). It is then clamped by a spring across its diameter (earth). This clamping action is firm and positive, designed to withstand harsh conditions and vibrations such as those found in moving vehicles and heavy equipment.

The clamping spring is secured with a stainless steel screw and solder tab, with the solder tab taking the earth wire. A second, specially-designed spring, is inserted from the top of the housing and held in place by a T-shaped cover. This spring makes contact with the data surface of the iButton. The spring has a small hole at the back onto which the data wire is soldered.

The touch and hold probe can be installed on surfaces such as front panels or boxes. A rectangular cut-out is required for installation. Illustrated instructions for installation purposes, as well as general dimensions, are available from MBL Technologies.

Typical applications for our touch and hold probe include:

  • Pre-paid meters
  • Security and immobilizer systems
  • Vehicle management systems
  • Equipment for operation by authorised personnel only, such as
    • Computers
    • Vehicles
    • Hi-tech or specialised hardware
    • Machinery
  • Any process that requires data transfer to/from the iButton for a prolonged period (more than a simple touch transfer)
  • Dispensing machines
  • Petrol pumps

MAGNETIC PROBE (ML9092MG)

The new ML9092-MG Magnetic Probe is a unique device that was designed to hold a magnetic fob in place by means of magnetic force. The housing is built from a non-magnetic metal, which has a round, flat face in the front and - in the middle of this face - an insulated, spring-loaded pin (which acts as the contact). Built into the Magnetic Probe are small magnets which create the required magnetic field. This attracts magnetic metals, and thus pulls and holds them onto the front face. At the back of the probe is a solder lug (for the ground signal).

The magnetic fob consists of a nickel-plated steel ring pushed over an iButton, which is inserted into a plastic fob. When this fob is held close to the front face of the Magnetic Probe, it is pulled onto the probes face by the magnetic force exerted on the steel ring, and held firmly in place. The ML9092-MG can be mounted onto any panel using an M8 nut. A second nut is used to hold he solder lug in place.

While held in place by the magnetic force, the center contact (spring-loaded pin) transfers the signal (data) read from the iButton to a wire that is soldered to an insulated pin at the back of the probe. The steel ring - which touches the front face of the probe - transfers the ground (earth) signal to a wire soldered to a solder lug at the back of the probe (the probes housing thus acts as ground).

The Magnetic Probe can be used in any application requiring an iButton to be read or written to for any extended (that is, non-instantaneous) period of time. Some examples of these applications include:

  • The food services and/or restaurant industry
  • Cash registers
  • Computer and data processing
  • Time and attendance
  • Access control

LP TOUCH PROBE (ML9092LP)

The new LP Touch Probe, has been designed as a simpler version of a standard Touch Probe, to cater for applications in the lower cost market.

It is built using a two-part plastic housing with the two halves clicking together to create a low profile probe. This probe has two types of contacts. These nickel-plated brass contacts are inserted inside the body, each having a solder tab extending out of the housing.

Two wires are soldered to these tabs and are an integral part of this probe. The LP probe has a round double-sided tape on its base for easy installation on any flat surface. As such, no holes or cut outs are required.
